Abstract

Objective. To examine the role of the most prominent Science Centers in Colombia -Maloka, Explora, the District Planetarium and the Botanical Garden of Medellin- in the programs developed during the last decade. Method. A detailed review was used, highlighting the diversity of activities, audiences and themes addressed by each center. The impact of these programs on the local and national community is analyzed, as well as the challenges faced and opportunities for improvement identified. Results. This study contributes to make visible the important work of these centers in the promotion of science and education in Colombia, and offers recommendations to strengthen their impact in the future. Conclusions. The results presented evidence the relevant and significant role of science centers in the country, emphasizing how the appropriation of knowledge is only possible if there is a robust, empathetic and decisive policy for legislation that allows the investment of sufficient public resources in these institutions, as they are committed to social development in a broad spectrum.
